About us

Mediation Leeds has been providing mediation since 1988 and is one of the longest established mediation services in the UK.

It was developed to offer an alternative to the courts for neighbours in dispute who wished to address their differences in a constructive way and neighbour mediation still forms the majority of the work of the service. However, Mediation Leeds also offers mediation to employees in the workplace and conciliation to practitioners and their patients as part of the NHS complaints procedure (see our services for further information).

Mediation Leeds, like many other voluntary sector organisations and charities, used to be wholly dependent on grants for all of its income. Over the years these grants came from a variety of sources including in more recent years the National Lottery, SRB5, Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and grants from Leeds City Council Neighbourhoods and Housing and Community Safety service areas.

In 2004 the Board decided to develop a more sustainable approach to funding and successfully secured a loan and grant support from FutureBuilders England to help with this transition. As a result, we now have agreements with many of the key providers of social housing in Leeds and the surrounding area. Included are the Arms Length Management Organisations [ALMOs] and Tenant Management Organisations that manage Leeds City Council housing stock, Housing Associations and several key services provided by the Council.

Whilst we have been successful in securing a significant amount of funding through agreements, we are still dependent to a certain extent on some grant funding. Unfortunately, as a result of an overall reduction in funding in 2008-2009, we have had to close our doors to non funded cases and, therefore, can no longer provide mediation free of charge to every Leeds resident. Only cases that are covered by an agreement can now access a free service; all other cases will need to be paid for by the parties concerned, albeit at a reduced rate.

For more information about our current agreements, please see our Supporters page.
