Information for Volunteers

Volunteer leaflet Volunteers are vitally important to Mediation Leeds and carry out most of the organisations mediation work.                                                                                                                                  Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcomed, as we want our mediator team to reflect the diversity of the areas we work in. We are recruiting now for the autumn course.

All volunteers are provided with ongoing support, supervision and training in addition to all out-of-pocket expenses.

FAQs

What do you mean by mediation?

See our what is mediation section

What will I get out of this course?

role description

You will learn about mediation: what it is and how it works.

You will be able to practise new skills, for example, listening, summarising, affirming other people, giving feedback, assertiveness, facilitation and conflict management skills.

Do I need to have any experience?

No! All that is needed is a bit of spare time, and a willingness to take part and learn.

How do I know if I would make a good mediator?

Many people are already mediating at home, at work or with friends.

Good mediators develop qualities such as patience, a liking for people, feeling comfortable with conflict, self-awareness, and a belief in people's ability to solve their own disputes.

What sort of disputes does Mediation Leeds deal with?

We deal with disputes between neighbours anywhere in Leeds. We also provide a workplace mediation service and a conciliation service for Leeds and Bradford Primary Care Trusts. See our services section.

How long is the course?

The course is approximately 45 hours, which may be spread over evenings and weekends or take place during the day on a weekday. You may also have additional work to do in your own time.

Do I have to come to all the sessions?

It is important that you make every attempt to attend all the sessions, as each one builds on the topics covered in the last. If you wish to volunteer for Mediation Leeds, you will need to show that by the end of the course you have developed and practised all the skills necessary to be a mediator.

Will I get a qualification?

The course is accredited by the National Open College Network (Level 3) and you can receive up to four credits for the work you do on the course.

How much does it cost?

There is a nominal charge of £50 for the course, payable in advance. (This can be reduced or waived in cases of hardship).

Will my expenses be paid?

We will refund travel expenses to participants who wish to volunteer for us afterwards. We will contribute towards the cost of childcare where necessary.

I'd like to find out more, who do I contact?
