What is mediation?
Most disputes are sorted out informally. However, sometimes people need help in getting understood and understanding each other's point of view. This is where mediation can help.
Mediation is a process in which an impartial third party helps disputing parties work out an agreement. The disputants, not the mediator, decide the terms of the agreement.
Mediation aims to:
- change disputing behaviour;
- resolve conflict;
- make realistic, workable agreements;
- maintain parity between parties;
- treat people fairly.
Mediation is:
- constructive;
- informal;
- staged (takes a step by step approach);
- facilitated by an impartial person;
- confidential;
- able to deal with a variety of issues;
- future focused;
- a voluntary process.
